A deionized water system is a collection of tanks that uses the ion exchange process to deionize water. Water is forced through a resin bed (either in a pressure tank or in a drop-in cartridge inserted into a tank), where mineral particles with corresponding electrical charges attach to resin beads.

Deionization is the process of removing positively and negatively charged ions (cations and anions, respectively) from water. These ions are regarded as contaminants because they produce false results in scientific testing and are corrosive to metals and metal alloys.
